Qualifications seem to be a contentious area in IT security. Some people swear by them. Some people see hands-on experience being more valuable than a piece of paper saying you have read about a topic. I’d agree with that assessment, but qualifications with experience show a level of measured competence and an interest in the topic.

So, I’m pushing on with a series of qualification targets. The list and the order I’ll tackle them is below. It may seem a lot but ultimately I’d like to move into academia so it’s suits my goals.

By the end of 2013, I’ll be hoping to qualify with the Comptia Security+ and CISSP exams.

Just a note on the order. I’m sitting the Comptia exam before the CISSP to gain a good foothold of the topics and terminology in the field. The CISSP is quite a mouthful to bite off for your first chew.

  1. Comptia Security + (SYO-301)
  2. CISSP
  3. Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
  4. Comptia Advanced Practioner
  5. Masters Degree in Security
